Manual therapy for dance medicine FAQ:
-
Manual therapy is a skill set distinct to physical therapy in which hands or tools or a combination of both are used to address soft tissues and joints in the body for rehabilitation purposes.
-
In a lot of ways, manual therapy and massage are similar. In a manual therapy dance recovery session, massage techniques relevant to muscle recovery will be used.
-
Muscles that have worked hard build up waste products that settle in the muscle resulting in DOMS. It is a well-established fact that massage increases the flow of circulation (both blood and lymph) to remove these waste products and prevent excess soreness.
-
Delayed onset muscle soreness is common to all athletes and exercise enthusiasts. Anyone is susceptible to DOMS, but dancers have rigorous all year seasons that commonly don’t allow for adequate muscle recovery between classes, rehearsals, and performances.
-
This recovery session also includes a manual therapy technique called joint mobilization. Decompressing joints that have taken impact from landing. such as in the feet and ankles, will benefit from being mobilized to reduce stiffness and aching.
-
Katy communicates each technique and its purpose prior to performing it with the goal being relief of soreness, stiffness, and discomfort. This recovery session is not meant to cause or provoke any pain response.
-
Physical therapists are highly skilled in performing a wide range of manual therapy techniques outside of the 12 part dancer recovery session offered above. Manual therapy techniques have far reaching benefits including: improving cellular nutrition, improve lymphatic drainage, improving circulation to avascular tissues, breaking up adhesions new and old, releasing fibrous areas in muscles, and removing tone from tight, short muscles.
